A Word From Our Founder
Smart Screen is all about making your life easier - and cleaner. We’re on a mission to change the way people sanitise their tech and to achieve that we need to be putting our product into as many hands as possible.
Things are going exceptionally well, and less people are using their clothing or damaging chemicals on their devices which makes us really happy. So happy, in fact, that we’ve decided to have a word with our founder. Why? So we can give you some insight into the origins of our brand and how it all works. There’s no-one more qualified to tell you about it than he is!
We’re confident that once you know all there is to know about Smart Screen, you’ll recommend it to your friends and family, and soon enough, everyone will have a #SmartScreenSaviour.
Tell our readers a little about yourself.
My name is David Sant and I’ve been a leading interiors and lifestyle designer for 20 years. I studied design at Chelsea Art College after starting my career in the City of London. I’ve always had an eye for exceptional design, but when I’m not working I enjoy cycling, dog walking, swimming, travelling and adding to my film library.
The question everyone wants to know the answer to - how did you think up the idea for Smart Screen?
Living in London, commuting makes up a large part of everyone’s day. It’s not as horrendous as people outside of the city may think - it’s a great way to take some time out, to relax with a device or to simply people watch. I love my tech, and find it a great way to catch up on the news or a tv series. I’ve always been partial to people watching too, and it was on my commute that I found myself observing other travellers and I noticed quite a few things.
Picture the scene: a busy commuter train in rush hour, thousands of people joining and leaving the train, the majority glued to their screens. Ah, wait a minute… the first time in their busy schedule that they’ve had a chance to notice how much grease, grime and finger marks have built up on their screens. There I found myself, day after day on those very trains observing how people would clean their phones on their jeans, a handkerchief, a jacket sleeve - you name it, they used it! A lot of people were not cleaning their devices properly and when I did some research it soon became apparent why: there wasn’t a product that was specifically made to make it easy! Not a lot of people are aware of how to look after and clean their tech, which is a shame. The idea came to me to meet this need and to have a product that can be taken on every journey people take.
So your idea and research brought you to a microfibre cloth. What makes Smart Screen so special?
Yes, a microfibre cloth because they are the gold standard in cleaning. Not only can they reduce how long cleaning takes, but they can also cut down on the amount of cleaning products you need to purchase. This approach was the perfect choice because the small fibres pick up more dirt and residue than standard cloths. Oil, grease, dirt and germs can all be lifted thanks to the cloth covering a larger surface area (other stats?) and being fully antibacterial. We added in Silver Ion solution the Smart Screen’s superior cleaning property which allows us boast the world’s first antibacterial microfibre cleaning cloth specifically dedicated to cleaning Smartphones on the go.
What are your go-to bits of tech and your favourite app of the moment?
I can’t be without my iPhone 12, my iPad Pro or Netflix. I like to have my Canon camera with me on walks and the Smart Screen works great on that, too!
How long did it take for Smart Screen to go from an idea to a physical product?
From beginning to launch, the process took 18 months. I knew that I didn’t want to take too long to bring the product to market as it could make a real difference - this was all in motion long before COVID-19. Initial designs were prepared with a specialist company, and after thorough evaluation progressed the project with a textile consultant and a manufacturing consultant here in the UK.
